Is it moral for a god to "test the faith of believers" in a way that he knows will cause them to fail the test?

Believers think God's moral commands are moral by default and need no explanation. They misunderstand the contingency and relativity of morality. So they will explain it away by saying he knows best and can do whatever the heck he wants to us, and it'll be our fault. Hardships supposedly brought forth by God are just a perfect example of battered woman syndrome.
