Best place to shoot a deer...?

Everyone seems to say behind the shoulder. A buddy of mine is a hunter and he told me that after years of hunting, the neck is a better place to shoot. He said if you hit them behind the shoulder, you'll have to track them a lot of the time, but if you hit them in the neck, they'll drop immediately. Is this true? I'll be hunting with a FAL which is .308
