Why is the M 14 considered a great rifle when it was only in service 1959-1969?

Because it is, and was a great dependable accurate rifle.* Its disadvantages were its weight and you could not carry as much ammo for it like you could the 223 caliber ammo.* However it outperformed the 223 caliber any day of the week.*
